Who are you?

Ok, I was flipping chanels the other day and i paused on this show and one guy asks another who he is.   The second guy responds with something like “I am a professional…”  whatever.   The first guy says, ” That is what you do, not who you are! Now tell me who you are!”  I did not stay and watch the rest of the show,  but I got to thinking about that interaction.   I think each guy is right in some way.

The one guy thinks what you do does not define who you are.  He could be right in a few instances.  For example, I am the son of my mom and dad.  That helps define me, but nothing I really did for that part.  I am 5 foot something tall.  That also defines me but I had little control over that either.  These type of things help define me, but is this really who I am?

The second guy kept telling his friend what he did and, even though the first guy argued with him, I think these things help define you more than the others.  I think it is not just what I do for a living, but what I do all togehter that makes me who I am.  I believe that the things that are most important to me are the things I spend time on.  The things I spend time on are the things that define who I am.  I don’t know if it’s importance is necessarily proportional to the amount of time spent,  but I do think the ammount of time spend is proportional to how much that activity defines who I am.

In an effort to better define me, here is a list of things I spend my time on.  this list is not exaustive, and intentionally not in order:

Kids 7 of them, 2 boys and 5 girls

Wife

Dogs

Work

church

seminary teacher

techno magazines

computer games

cooking

teaching Fosterpaenting class

Friends

Siblings

If any of you know of more I need to add feel free to comment.
